Ahungahungaaq

In the region of the Copper Inuit, elders have shared stories of a mysterious giant seen crossing from the mainland to the southernmost tips of Liston Island and Sutton Island, in Dolphin and Union Strait. It was summer and the sea was free of ice. This giant was so large that the seawater barely came above his knee and when he reached the mainland, this huge being picked up several boulders and began to juggle.

We are told that this giant’s display of power frightened the group of Inuit camped on the island. The angakkuq living at the camp wished to protect the camp, so he whispered a curse into the air. At once, the giant sensed the magic and tried to flee. However, before he reached the beach, he was transformed into rock. And there he remains frozen into the landscape.

One of their shamans chanted a spell against him, and the giant immediately dropped his stones and tried to flee, but before he reached the edge of the island he was changed to rock. Now only his nose and eyebrows are visible; formerly, he wore a red belt, but the wind has carried that away. His juggling stones can still be seen lying where he dropped them, on top of the rock Ahungahungaaq.
